The Man Behind The Art
The creator of over hundreds of paintings, Arnold Friberg is recognized as one of America’s great visual historians, chronicling our foremost leaders in their times of need. Friberg’s Prayer at Valley Forge, portraying a kneeling George Washington, was a favorite of President Ronald Reagan.
“One of the most inspiring portrayals of American history is that of George Washington on his knees in the snow at Valley Forge.”
- Ronald Reagan | Thanksgiving Proclamation 1986
Growing up in the American southwest, it’s easy to see that horses, and their relationship with their rider, made quite an impact on Friberg. From painted ponies with their rugged riders to Queen Elizabeth astride her thoroughbred, Friberg’s paintings captured the sacred relationship of human and horse.
Friberg, a Lifetime Fellow of the elite Royal Society of Arts, was the only American commissioned to paint an equestrian portrait of two members of the British royal family. He painted a portrait of H.R.H. Prince Charles in 1978 and the other of H.R.H. Queen Elizabeth II in 1990. Both paintings feature the Queen’s horse, Centenial, the great-grandson of the famous racehorse, Man-O-War.
